    The primary purpose of this position is to manage the activities of staff members in the department and oversee the completion, review, and approval of assigned analyses and associated quality control requirements.  This person will also be expected to provide analytical support as needed in the various instrument areas of the department.


    ALS Environmental



    • Ensure compliance with laboratory standards as stated in the laboratory Quality Systems Manual, corporate and laboratory SOPs and all certification requirements;

    • Evaluate and maintain appropriate staffing levels and analytical instrumentation necessary to support operational needs;

    • Direct and coordinate the activities of the department including the management of all personnel and capital resources available in order to successfully meet laboratory and client turnaround time requirements;

    • Analysis of water and soil samples  using Aglient ICPMS, Thermo ICP and CETAC Mercury instrumentation;

    • Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting

    • Review of Metals department raw data and LIMS entries to ensure results are accurately reported;  

    • Compilation of final CLP-like data packages;

    • Method development and implementation of new technologies;

    • Preparation and recordkeeping of standards and reagents;

    • Providing assistance to metals preparation group as needed;

    • Complete performance evaluations and establish individual goals for department personnel on an annual basis;

    • Uphold and enforce safety regulations as dictated and directed by corporate policy and the safety committee.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Knowledgeable in all EPA and SW-846 Metals Analysis and Preparation Methods, including all quality control requirements;

    • Experience with management of personnel and workflow in a laboratory setting;  

    • Proven track record of successful instrument operation  using Aglient ICPMS, Thermo ICP and CETAC Mercury instrumentation; 

    • Demonstrated strong maintenance and troubleshooting skills;  

    • Strong track record of method development including bringing on-line new methods, instruments and technologies;

    • Strong technical understanding of analytical chemistry;

    • Strong commitment to quality and integrity;

    • Diligent work ethic and the ability to work independently;

    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask;

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related Science degree, plus a minimum of 5 years of experience in an environmental laboratory setting and 5-10 years metals analysis experience.

    Physical Demands:

    • The ability to stand for intervals of up to 8 hours while working; 

    • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with co-workers and managers;

    • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate equipment and handle glassware;

    • Must have average vision and able to see to read reports and operate equipment;

    • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
