The IT Operations Director is responsible for effective & efficient operational support of all internally managed and third-party IT infrastructure used to support all business applications and IT services across the enterprise.  This includes setting the strategy and overseeing 24/7 and tier support and operations of IT systems and infrastructure, the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects, and for operational service management processes to ensure quality, efficiency, security, productivity & agility goals are achieved.  The scope includes cloud services, data centers, networks, security, service desk, desktop and mobile device management, and related hardware/software and supporting staff.


As a member of the IT senior leadership team, the role contributes to the development and execution of IT strategy and ensures its alignment with business strategy and the delivery of capabilities required to achieve business success.  The position requires exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to communicate a vision that inspires and motivates IT operations staff and aligns to the IT and business strategies.


This individual will have a diversified background of extensive technical infrastructure experience, demonstrated project management acumen, and excellent vendor management skills; an adept leader with a service-oriented approach to IT operations.  This is very much a hands-on position so extensive knowledge of networking and infrastructure technology and strong management skills are a must.  Strong IT operations acumen is required, including cross-domain knowledge and preferably earlier career experience in an individual contributor role in IT operations.


Duties include but not limited to:

  • Responsibility for the design and deployment of IT operation services and infrastructure to enable a stable applications environment and a quality user experience. This includes data center operations, both on-premise and Cloud.
  • Work with CIO and business leaders to develop and implement corporate IT vision and strategy to support business objectives.
  • Ensure IT operations follows standardized operations and support methods, procedures, and policies leveraging ITIL.
  • Develop and manage incident/event management, problem management, change management, event management, and request management processes.
  • Ensures support strategies, model and standards aligns with overall business goals and related scorecards.
  • Serve as a point of escalation and communication for IT staff, stakeholders, and executive leadership, while also communicating project and delivery status.
  • Partner with service/application owners to support their projects to implement change and enable the production support capabilities that support these changes, while ensuring proper transition to your support team.
  • Provide leadership in planning and managing computer operations and production support, systems administration, network operations, PC/desktop support, mobile devices and Help Desk.
  • Responsible for the development, review and certification of all back-up and disaster recovery procedures and plans.
  • Direct risk evaluation and remediation activities across all operations.
  • Direct teams of technical staff in the successful fulfillment of IT service delivery commitments.
  • Develop and manage overall IT operations budget including capital budget in consultation with CIO and IT Managers.
  • Oversee the formulation of, and adherence to, IT policies, procedures, and performance management processes and measures.
  • Define service level objectives and ensure they are met.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with safety, security and compliance rules, regulations and best practices.
  • Contract and licensing negotiation to ensure the best deals are available to ALS.
  • Working cooperatively with application teams to ensure their applications run smoothly and infrastructure is stable and fit for their purposes.
  • Continuous improvement of all ALS IT tools and infrastructure.
  • Advise, evaluate and report on information technology risks, cyber security and ensure there are robust information systems, communication lines and equipment.
  • Assess new technologies to determine potential value for the company.
  • Availability for flexible working including travel to national and international locations, as required.

Quality Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that any materials created such as policies are properly named/numbered and version control practices are observed.

Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • To be familiar with the OH&S policies and procedures as applicable to this position scope



  • A total of 15+ experience in IT operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in senior IT operations management positions.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or experience commiserate.
  • International experience, working with and overseeing vendors and staff in multiple countries.
  • Extensive knowledge of infrastructure planning and operations, design and deployment, and system lifecycle management on a global scale including:
    • LAN/WAN (MPLS, Ethernet, SD-WAN) architecture, deployment, technologies, routing and switching platforms.
    • VLANs, Wi-Fi.
    • Data center operations.
    • Firewalls and related security protocols.
    • VoIP.
    • Traffic routing protocols. 
  • Experience with global vendor outsourcing models, including cloud and other managed services.
  • Working experience with the use of and transitioning services to public, private and hybrid cloud services, such as Azure, AWS, and other providers.
  • Experience with technologies including Oracle, Microsoft SQL, SharePoint, VMWare, Cisco network environment, Skype for Business.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technology, technology directions and strategic application to business needs.
  • Excellent project management skills, including ability to effectively deploy resources and manage multiple projects of diverse scope in a cross-functional environment.
  • Strong business acumen in managing costs, developing business cases, and delivering cost effective solutions
  • Ability to travel, up to 30%.
  • Host regular team meetings / information sessions.
  • Commit to listen to and understand others, act on ideas and suggestions, share relevant and accurate information and provide timely feedback when required
