Job Summary:

Perform analysis of samples including quality control according to the procedures established for routine and specialized areas of the Food Safety laboratory. The technologist will also participate in customer service, training, instrument operation, troubleshooting, inventory control and problem resolution.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive, properly identify and solve problems as related to samples as they are processed for routine and emergency assays
  • Perform accurate analysis in a timely fashion with result data reported within department’s defined criteria for quality
  • Perform quality assurance procedures and review quality control data and client results for acceptability
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all quality activities as documented in procedures and test methods
  • Make precise measurements using visual assessment (examples: balance centering, weighing small amounts on balance, verification of equipment using small amounts of standard)
  • Handles samples and performing analyses according to procedures and test methods, which includes verifying small liquid transfers
  • Accurately enter and/or verify sample results into computer
  • Corrects nonconformance and potential nonconformance
  • Review, write or revise Food Safety methods, SOPs and techniques. Review policies and procedures as assigned
  • Assist in coordination and management of testing projects and validations
  • Recognize problem situations. Initiate appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision of test methods. Follow through with documentation and communication to Laboratory Manager or Operations Manager
  • Provide timely, courteous, and informative communications to all customers to ensure client satisfaction
  • Promote team environment by providing effective communications throughout the laboratory
  • Operate and maintain instrumentation
  • Assist with troubleshooting as required
  • Maintains an understanding of and ensures compliance to Marshfield Food Safety’s Quality System including the Quality Manual, Quality Manual System Procedures (QMSPs), and procedures as applicable to ISO 17025
  • Assist in inventory control
  • Assist in the training of employees
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Promote and contribute to personal safety as well as the safety of other individuals
  • Maintain attendance and remain flexible to work schedule
  • Demonstrate a continued interest in self-improvement by attending programs related to food safety
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications: B.S. in Biology, Microbiology or related field. Minimum of two years of laboratory experience.  Previous food safety testing experience is highly desirable.  Experience with Laboratory Information Systems is beneficial. Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong math skills. Ability to work alone or with minimal supervision.

This position requires the ability to read and understand English, verbalize in English, and perform procedures as written.

 

Employees are required to use fine hand manipulation, visually examine specimens and systems, and monitor instruments and other equipment via audible beepers and/or visual light systems. It also requires critical analysis skills and the ability to focus on multiple tasks simultaneously.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required (at least 50% of the time) to stand, bend, push, pull, stoop and crouch. The employee must routinely lift (with both hands) and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavier loads with assistance.

 

Specific vision requirements include the ability to see at close range, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

           

Typical Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, day, evening, and night hours dependent on staffing requirements. Includes weekend and holiday rotation and the ability to work additional hours as staffing needs require. Availability to cover workstation in case of an emergency including off-hours.
