General Accountability: The Sample Receiving Technician (a non-analytical position) will be assisting all areas of the lab as directed.  Duties will include, but are not limited to: receiving samples and supplies, sorting and labeling, disposing old samples, cleaning containers and glassware, data entry, data review, assembling bottle orders, cleaning and shipping coolers, archiving and scanning data and customer files, filing, and sample preparation.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • The Sample Receiving Technician is responsible to learn and utilize laboratory LIMS system and software;
  • Required to verify client paperwork and sample id’s;
  • Required to log in samples and retrieve project information;
  • Review logged projects for accuracy prior to analysis;
  • Receive samples from outside clients, UPS, and Fed Ex;
  • Responsible to accurately document information in controlled logbooks such as temperature and control numbers;
  • Must develop an understanding of quality control and the requirements of quality control.
  • Must be able to help in perform basic tasks in a laboratory environment including, but not limited to; washing glassware, weighing or measuring samples, and other basic tasks;
  • Transport samples to appropriate storage locations and dispose of expired samples;
  • General office duties including answering phones, transferring calls, scanning, copying, e-mail etc;
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed. 


 Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment for long periods of the day.
  • Desire to work in non-analytical position in a laboratory setting;
  • Ability to multi-task and work as part of a team;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle numerous details;
  • A commitment to cross training;
  • Familiarity with computer systems and e-mail; a working knowledge of Excel a plus;
  • Detail oriented – able to accurately interpret and transcribe information from a client chain of custody into the laboratory computer system;
  • Must be able to print legibly;
  • Good typing / data entry skills;
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures in the laboratory setting;
  • Strong commitment to quality and integrity;
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends;
  • Ability to work mandatory overtime during peak times- usually required on a monthly basis.


  • High School Diploma is required and some college level courses in a science curriculum are preferred.  Training is provided.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and coworkers.
  • Strong commitment to quality and integrity.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to sit or stand for large periods of the work day;
  • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with staff, management, and clients;
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computers, handle glassware, and other equipment;
  • Must have average vision and able to see to read reports and operate equipment;
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
