Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Operational

  • Responsible for managing the fire assay department including planning, directing, and coordinating all activities within the department;
  • Ensures the department is suitably equipped and staffed and operates in an efficient, effective, and profitable manner;
  • Ensures the optimal turnaround time for samples is achieved and maintained whilst ensuring highest quality of results for clients using approved methodologies;
  • Monitor ways to increase productivity and efficiency and ensure productivity levels are met;
  • Evaluate productivity metrics and prepare monthly reports;
  • Advises on the recommended purchase of capital equipment and preparing CEP’s as required;
  • Develop and implement on-going training programs for department staff to ensure technical and leadership skills are enhanced in order to effectively respond to new analytical techniques and time critical requests;
  • Proactively review, prepare, and develop all SOPs for new and revised analytical methods;
  • Participate in regular lab safety, technical, and operation meetings;
  • Actively participate in global peer group initiatives, assist in evaluating new equipment and methods and provide expert advice and recommendations for improvement;
  • Conduct regular crew talks with staff to discuss department issues on quality, safety, and production;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the lab manager.

 

Financial

  • Ensures that the department is run according to the strategic and business plan;
  • Ensures all financial targets are met and/or exceeded including: ROS, EBIT, Net Revenues and TEC;
  • Oversees and monitors costs and production levels to ensure the department stays within budget.

 

Personnel

  • In conjunction with our Human Resources team you will be involved in employee interviews, recruiting and training staff as required;
  • Approve timesheets and overtime using Kronos, schedule and approve vacation and shift assignments;
  • Maintains training records for all department staff.
  • Prepares and delivers performance evaluations;
  • Actively manages staff including addressing performance issues as per ALS Group policies;
  • Responsible for performance management including disciplinary action and termination if necessary;
  • Communicate and enforces ALS Group employment policies and procedures.

 

Quality

  • Foster a working environment that ensures quality targets are met or exceeded;
  • Ensure that the quality of analytical data produced is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards;
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained and of the standard required to meet or exceed QC targets;
  • Maintains all ISO and quality related documents for the department;
  • Assess the results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements as required;
  • Conduct investigation for client inquiries related to quality issues and suggest proactive actions;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality.

 

 

Safety

Responsible for the safe operation of the department;

  • Provide the necessary equipment and environment to ensure safety in the laboratory;
  • Immediately rectifies any unsafe laboratory practice;
  • Ensure adequate OHS training for staff;
  • Conduct routine safety crew talks and communicate all safety concerns, incidents, or potential hazards to the HSE Coordinator;
  • Ensure new methods and safety initiatives are carried out and discussed with staff;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. in Chemistry or Chemistry related diploma required;
  • Completion or participation in an assayer certification program would be an asset;
  • Minimum of 10 years of analytical laboratory experience with a minimum of 5 years in Fire Assay;
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory or management experience.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Environment can be dusty and warm;
  • Ability to sit/and or stand for up to 7.5 hours per shift;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks.
