About the role:

 

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible to oversee the daily operations of the Tucson Environmental laboratory. Works with all laboratory departments to ensure work is processed in accordance with client requirements. This includes staffing, production management, equipment, training, systems, facilities management, and appropriate workspace, while working with our Sales and Client Services team to ensure that ALS is their laboratory of choice.

Responsibilities

 About you:

  • Oversees all aspects of the laboratory operations, people management, client services and client relationships to maximize revenue and profitability for the assigned laboratory.
  • Oversees laboratory safety, including ensuring adherence to all OSHA requirements and internal policies, identifying potentially hazardous conditions and addressing them promptly
  • Lead monthly employee meetings, and ensure production meetings, safety meetings, safety inspections, and incident investigations are completed..
  • Ensures Turnaround time compliance for all samples processed through the lab to be in accordance with ALS and client requirements
  • Ensure EBIT expectations are met through oversight of revenue generation and facility operational processes, procedures, accounts, staffing and other applicable efficiencies. 
  • Works closely with Quality Assurance and Technical Managers to ensure laboratory data meets all applicable method criteria, client criteria, and meets the requirements of accrediting bodies.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Standard.
  • Works closely with local and corporate Business Development staff and Project Management to continually develop new and existing business, including outside visits to clients when necessary.
  • Provide weekly and monthly laboratory reports as required.  Develops annual laboratory budget and works with Technical Sales Representatives to develop revenue budgets.
  • Work with Human Resources for all aspects of hiring and managing personnel complying with company goals, guidelines, and requirements.
  • Responsible for the sustainable growth of the business to ensure it meets budget and strategic growth target set by ALS.
  • Ensure all quality requirements are met as set by ALS and regulatory authorities. 
  • Actively engaged in developing and executing business development strategies
  • Develop and implement improvements when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Understand requirements for managing Health, Safety and the Environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field is required.
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a Department Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Manager, or Project Manager preferred.
  • Customer service experience is required
  • High level of proficiency in QA/QC is required

Physical Demands:

  • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with staff, management, and clients.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer and other equipment.
  • Must have average vision and be able to see to read reports.
  • Ability to travel to client locations to promote new business.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, LIMS, and Internet based reference libraries.
  • Possess excellent customer relation skills including the ability to assist sales and marketing with client visits and presentations.
  • The ability to promote staff development and manage conflicts as necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Routinely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move heavier loads with assistance.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, push, pull, stoop and crouch up to 25% of the time while performing the duties of this position.
  • Must be able to work on computer while sitting for up to 8 hours per day.
