About the role:

 

GCMS Supervisor will be responsible for managing and improving a dynamic group in a high volume, fast-paced environment. Will need to meet daily deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and efficient use of consumables. Will need to be a strong, positive leader for the group. Experience in or familiarity with GC/MS instrumentation required. The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervision of staff members, oversee the completion, review, and approval of assigned analyses and associated quality control requirements, and manage the workflow in the department.

Responsibilities

About you:

 

  • Ensure compliance with NELAC standards and other regulatory requirements, such as state requirements or DoD, etc.
  • Have the ability to train individuals on complex laboratory tests at the highest level.
  • Perform work requiring advanced knowledge, applying discretion and judgement.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of the department including the management of all personnel and resources to successfully meet laboratory and client turnaround time requirements.
  • Sustain an in-depth knowledge of all procedures performed in the department and ensure these procedures comply with published methods, NELAC standards, and good laboratory practices.
  • Set up or assist in setting up of department instrumentation. Perform calibrations, maintenance, troubleshooting of instruments.
  • Become proficient, a technical expert, in department equipment and methods.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and assist the IT department with maintaining daily operation and developing new features in a continuous effort to improve the efficiency of the department.
  • Monitor equipment/instrument performance, identify deviations from specifications, and notify Technical Manager if the equipment and/or instrument are not operating to specifications, including when equipment/instrument QC fall outside control limits.
  • Ensure that all quality control requirements associated with the department, including MDL/LOD/LOQ studies, SOP reviews, DOC requirements, and audit responses are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure adequate stock of supplies and materials necessary to support operational needs.
  • Develop and implement new methods and technologies when mandated by changes in regulations or client needs.
  • Be diverse in instrumentation capability.
  • Identify and report quality, procedural, and operational problems to supervisor.
  • Maintain quality control records and perform quality review of data to ensure the accuracy and integrity of results.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace.
  • Perform routine or complex instrument maintenance.
  • Understand and approve methodology changes which affect operations in the laboratory.
  • Complete performance evaluations and establish individual goals for department personnel on an annual basis.
  • Uphold and enforce safety regulations as dictated and directed by corporate policy and the safety committee

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • 4-year college degree from an accredited educational institute in the chemical, environmental, biological, or physical sciences or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with GCMS analyses in an environmental laboratory.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office.
  • Solid understanding of mass spectrometry theory and tuning techniques.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

Physical Demands:

 

  • The ability to speak and hear clearly while communicating with staff, management, and clients.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for 100% of an 8-hour day.
  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer, syringes, and other equipment.
